ITIN vs SSN Credit — The Real Differences (2026)
Short answer: the scoring math is identical. What changes is which lenders will report tradelines and which applications they'll approve. Here's the side-by-side.

The single biggest myth
There is no separate "ITIN credit score". Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion run the same VantageScore 4.0 and FICO 8/9 models on every file in their database, whether the identifier is an ITIN issued by the IRS or a Social Security Number issued by the SSA. A 720 is a 720.
ITIN vs SSN — side by side
| Feature | ITIN | SSN |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer | IRS | SSA |
| Format | 9 digits, starts with 9 | 9 digits |
| Scoring model | VantageScore 4.0 + FICO 8/9 | VantageScore 4.0 + FICO 8/9/10 |
| Lender pool | ITIN-accepting banks, CUs, ITIN mortgage programs | All U.S. lenders |
| Mortgage options | Non-QM ITIN programs (15–20% down typical) | Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA |
| Free annual report | Yes — AnnualCreditReport.gov | Yes — AnnualCreditReport.gov |
| FCRA dispute rights | Yes — Section 611 | Yes — Section 611 |
| Convert to the other | Merge into SSN file when issued | N/A — ITIN ends when SSN issued |
What changes about approval odds
With identical scoring, the practical gap between ITIN and SSN applications comes down to which lender's underwriting box you fit. ITIN-friendly lenders (community banks, credit unions, specific non-QM mortgage programs, most major secured-card issuers) approve ITINs at near-equivalent rates once your score and DTI qualify. National banks and most fintechs still default to SSN-only.

Switching from ITIN to SSN later
When the SSA issues your SSN, your years of ITIN history don't disappear — but only if you take action. Write to each bureau (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) with copies of your ITIN letter (CP565), SSA card, government-issued ID, and a recent utility bill. Ask them to merge the ITIN file under the new SSN. Per FCRA Section 611, bureaus must investigate and respond within 30 days.
We wrote an SSN-specific version of this guide with the key nuances and differences.
Read guideWhat is an ITIN, exactly?
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a 9-digit tax processing number issued by the IRS to anyone who has a U.S. federal tax filing requirement but isn't eligible for a Social Security Number. It always starts with a 9. Per the IRS, ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status — they exist purely to make tax compliance possible.
Who needs an ITIN?
- Non-resident aliens required to file a U.S. tax return.
- Resident aliens filing based on days of presence.
- Dependents or spouses of U.S. citizens or resident aliens.
- Dependents or spouses of non-resident visa holders.
How to get an ITIN
File IRS Form W-7 with proof of identity (passport is easiest) and a federal tax return. Processing takes 7–11 weeks. The IRS sends back a CP565 letter with your ITIN.
What is an SSN, exactly?
The Social Security Number (SSN) is a 9-digit number issued by the Social Security Administration to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and certain temporary residents authorized to work. It exists for Social Security benefits, but it has become the default U.S. consumer ID — required for federal employment, most W-2 jobs, and the majority of credit applications.
ITIN vs SSN for credit: every lender category
| Lender type | Accepts ITIN? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Secured credit cards | Most | Many national issuers + credit unions accept ITIN |
| Unsecured cards | Some | Capital One, AmEx (case-by-case), most credit unions |
| Auto loans | Yes | ITIN-friendly dealers and credit unions; expect higher rates |
| Mortgages | Yes (ITIN programs) | Community banks, CDFIs; typically 660+ score, 15–25% down |
| Personal loans | Some | Credit unions and select fintech lenders |
| Student loans (federal) | No | Federal loans require SSN; some private options available |
| Apartment leases | Yes | Landlords pull credit reports under ITIN normally |
ITIN vs SSN — what stays the same
- FCRA protections. The Fair Credit Reporting Act covers ITIN and SSN files identically.
- Scoring math. VantageScore 4.0 and FICO 8/9 do not look at the identifier — only the data.
- Dispute rights. 30-day investigation window under FCRA Section 611, with or without an SSN.
- Free annual report. AnnualCreditReport.gov serves ITIN holders the same as SSN holders.
